A bus carrying a church choir in Kenya headed to a wedding was swept away from a bridge and fell into a river trapping those inside as they took their last breaths.


The accident happened over the bridge of Enziu river which is located around 200 kilometers from the capital Nairobi.

The passengers cried for help as those passing by attempted to help them.

Only twelve people managed to get out while the others drowned deeper into the water.

The currently recorded death toll is 31 people, according to the governor of Kitui Charity Ngilu.

However as the rescue operations by the military are constituting numbers may still rise.

"Today we have been able to retrieve seven. We still have more bodies in the bus," she said in a statement.

"It is very, very sad indeed. We have lost so many lives," she added.

The President has also offered his condolences to the families of the victims and his office issued the following statement:

"Once again, the President wishes to remind Kenyans across the country to heed government advisory against attempting to cross swollen rivers especially during the current rainy season.”
