The situation with narcotic drugs in Russia remains difficult and is latent, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, RIA Novosti reports.

During the meeting of the Russian Security Council, Putin demanded to fight this problem more actively.

At the same time, he admitted that there are certain results in the fight against drug addiction in the Russian Federation. The head of state said that the number of officially registered drug users in Russia has decreased by more than a quarter in ten years.

After all, both the drug business and drug use are latent, and the analytical materials prepared for our meeting show that the situation remains difficult, Putin added.

He said that law enforcement agencies have identified more than 144,500 drug crimes over the nine months of this year. This is comparable to the same indicator last year - 145,000 drug crimes. At the same time, almost 18 tons of narcotic and psychotropic substances were withdrawn from illegal circulation.

NEWS.ru earlier reported that the number of drug addicts in Russia decreased almost 1.5 times since 2010, according to the Russian Healthcare Ministry's statistics.
