Coronavirus may change so much that the immunity forming in those who have been ill or as a result of vaccination will simply cease to work. With such a negative scenario, vaccines that are being developed now may turn out to be ineffective, according to Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor-Virologist Alexander Chepurnov.

He said the coronavirus pandemic is declining and will end over time. But only if the global mutation of its pathogen does not intervene in the process.

If there is a variability that will allow new strains of the virus to overcome immunity, both post-COVID and vaccine-induced, then we will have to flounder for a long time, URA.RU quotes Chepurnov.

The virologist noted that the British virus, which has scared the whole world, is vaccine-controlled. However, something worse may appear under the pressure of the population's immune layer, the specialist said.

The new coronavirus mutation was detected in the UK in mid-December. According to experts, the strain spreads faster and can be 70% more infectious than usual. However, there is no confirmation that it is more dangerous in terms of hospitalization and mortality.
