Philippines battles against one of strongest contagion outbreaks in Asia with more than 1.3 million cases and 23000 deaths. Amid all of this, the president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to jail those who refuse to get vaccinated.

“You choose, vaccine or I will have you jailed”, Duterte said in a televised address on Monday.

His remarks run contrary to the health officials, who have said that the vaccination process was voluntary.

“I’m just exasperated by Filipinos not heeding the government”, said Duterte.

As of June 20, there were only 2.1 million people who have been fully vaccinated, which is around 2% of the population of the Philippines. The government aims to immunize up to 70 million people in the country of 110 million.

The medical community of the Philippines has been striving to encourage people to get a vaccine shot by deploying inoculation camps at churches, malls and cinemas, in order to give Philippines easier access to the shots.
