The infected patient was found in Tianjin, news agency China Daily reports.

On Monday Tianjin Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the municipality had recorded the first case of COVID variant Omicron in mainland China.

According to local authorities’ data, the patient arrived in China from abroad on December 9 and had no symptoms. The infected person was isolated and placed under treatment in hospital.

The information about the first Omicron case discovered in the region neighboring Beijing appears as China prepares to receive athletes from all over the world who will participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics. The Beijing games, widely denounced by Tibetan activists and human rights groups, will be held on February 4-20.

On Monday the first Omicron-infected patient passed away in the UK while British researchers warned that the new strain is likely to be more devastating than Delta.
