Kandahar’s Ahmad Shah Baba International airport was targeted by at least three rockets by Taliban militants, as the fight for Kandahar, Herat, and Lashkar Gah intensifies.

Kabul, Afghanistan’s second major city is being besieged by the Taliban, as it is of the highest strategic importance.

There were no casualties reported, however, all flights remain canceled until further notice, as the city is being stormed by the militant group.

“Kandahar airport was targeted by us because the enemy was using it as a center to conduct airstrikes against us,” Taliban’s spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an interview with Reuters

According to the Taliban, the Islamic movement has at least 90% of Afghanistan under its control, and seizing Kandahar would permit them to heavily strengthen their positions.

Earlier the Afghan government announced that it is adopting a new military strategy that would permit them to focus solely on strategically important cities and sites.

Whether this strategy will prove successful in repelling the Taliban attack on Kandahar is yet to be seen.
