A 69-year-old man whose name was not mentioned was returned to safety after he battled waves for 22 hours straight by himself off Japan.

The incident happened in the prefecture of Kagoshima when the man embarked on his boat to travel.

However during the trip the boat capsized indicating the beginning of the troubles for the old man.

He did manage to send an alert but special services were unable to find him for nearly 24 hours.

“He was out in the sea alone for 22 hours. I am amazed by his survival skills,” a coast guard official told AFP.

Among the factors that helped him survive was the fact that he wrapped himself in a grey plastic sheet that kept him relatively warm.
