Alec Baldwin shoots cast member dead with prop gun on movie set

American actor Alec Baldwin killed one and wounded another with a prop gun during the set of the western movie “Rust” in New Mexico.

Baldwin shot 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured film director Joel Souza. Hutchins was pronounced dead by the University of New Mexico Hospital after she had been immediately transported there via helicopter. Souza was admitted to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is currently being treated. The extent of the injuries could not immediately be determined.

Baldwin’s representative didn’t immediately comment on the actor’s shooting. On Thursday, news magazine People revealed that a spokesman for Baldwin had said that it was an accidental misfire of a prop gun with blanks.

Juan Rios, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office clarified the situation: “This investigation remains open and active. No charges have been filed in regard to this incident. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives,” adding that the investigators are in an attempt to determine what type of projectiles was fired.

Baldwin has been questioned by detectives and later released, according to the source.

Santa Fe New Mexican reported that the 63-year-old actor was seen outside the sheriff’s office bursting into tears but refused to comment further.

The film production has been temporarily halted.

In December 2011, Alec Baldwin was thrown off the plane that was set to take off due to his refusal to stop playing “Words with friends”, when he was asked to put away the gaming device the actor turned aggressive that led to his removal. Later the Hollywood actor apologized to other American Airlines passengers who had been in that plane for the flight delay.
