An offline gala event was held by the Kennedy Center Honors with US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill attending it.

Artists were chosen by their achievements and received awards for their cultural input.

Among those who were noted were folk music artist Joni Mitchell, singer of opera Justino Diaz, and the establisher of Motown Records label Berry Gordy.

The tradition of the President visiting the event has been halted until now since 2016 as former President Donald Trump and his wife haven't attended the event during Trump’s term.

The reason behind that was the fact that many artists threatened to avoid the event in case Trump attends them.

Despite being a massive offline event guests were not required to maintain social distance, however, everyone was required to be vaccinated or have a negative COVID-19 test.

The gala started with Cellist Yo-Yo Ma performing the national anthem and encouraging everyone present to sing the final voice lines together.

Each of the honorees received a surprise in the form of a tribute song that covered one of their compositions.

Among the anchors that presented the event was Michel Che who joked that the President would already be sleeping by the end of the evening.

“We welcome everyone back. Our nation is stronger, more dynamic and more vibrant because of you. I don’t think you fully appreciate what you do for so many people,” the President said in a statement.

Aside from Biden many other notable politicians attended the gala. Among them are Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The center was established back in 1971.
