Transmission of coronavirus infection is possible through sexual contact, said academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the National Medical Research Center of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology named after Kulakov Gennady Sukhin, the Interfax reports.
According to the expert, 5 percent of men had COVID-19 in their semen samples. All of them were recovering or had recently been infected. Sukhin stressed that the hypothesis that the coronavirus is sexually transmitted hasn’t yet been proven, so more research is needed.
The academician added that the virus is also dangerous for pregnant women. The most common consequences are premature birth or low weight in newborns.
The scientist is convinced that during a pandemic, the birth rate will be suspended this year but will grow shortly.
NEWS.ru reported earlier that the novel coronavirus mutation would not affect the vaccine’s effectiveness, Director of Russia’s Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology Alexander Ginzburg said.
