People infected with the coronavirus lose their ability to taste food for an average of 3-10 days, said Natalya Pshenichnaya, deputy director for clinical and analytical work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor (Russian consumer watchdog), TASS reports.


More than 50 percent of patients complain of loss or distortion of taste, and the sense of smell is lost in more than 80 percent of coronavirus infection cases, she said.

Loss of smell is more common in women and lasts from four to 11 days. The loss of taste usually lasts from 3 to 10 days, the deputy director emphasized.

The sense of smell after recovery from coronavirus will return gradually, but there is a danger of losing it forever, head of the somnology department at the research center of otorhinolaryngology of the medical and biological agency Alexander Melnikov said, NEWS.ru reported earlier.
