The US charged several high-profile members of the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel and among them is the brother of one of the main founders and the former leader of the cartel itself Joaquin Guzman also known as El Chapo.
"The indictments allege various violations of United States law related to the international distribution of controlled substances, including fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana, occurring over several years," the US Attorney’s office in Arizona said in a statement.
El Chapo himself is currently serving a life sentence in one of Colorado’s high security prisons.
He managed to escape from two prisons in Mexico therefore he was moved to the US.
Other members of El Chapo's family like his wife Emma Coronel Asipuro have already pled guilty as they followed Joaquins route and became part of his drug empire.
The story of the Sinaloa cartel and El Chapo in particular became known worldwide after Netflix made a series about the criminal’s life after a similar series about another drug lord Pablo Escobar gained popularity.
