Presumed footage of the incident which took place in annexed east Jerusalem has been uploaded to the net.

Israel’s police announced on Saturday that a man of Palestinian origin attacked a passer-by with a knife and tried to stab armed police officers in east Jerusalem and was killed on the spot.

“Around 4.30 p.m. the assailant stabbed a passer-by near the Damascus Gate in east Jerusalem and then tried to stab a border police officer,” Israeli law enforcement representatives said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent humanitarian organization confirmed that the attacker killed was of Palestinian origin while Israel’s emergency service Magen David Adom unveiled that the targeted civilian was a 20-year-old man of Jewish origin. He has been hospitalized and his condition is currently estimated to be from moderate to critical.

Local media report that the attacker was aged 25 and came from the northern West Bank town of Salfit.

Israeli police commander Amir Cohen dubbed the incident and terrorist act and lauded the reaction of the patrollers.

“I deliver my full support to the forces who responded to the incident as they should have and neutralized the terrorist and prevented other similar attempts in the zone,” the chief said.

Jerusalem has recently seen another shooting when a Palestinian opened fire in the Old City near the Al-Aqsa Mosque killing at least two Israeli citizens.
