The operational-tactical Iskander-M missile system will remain the primary weapon of the Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Ground Forces, Chief of the Forces, Lieutenant General Mikhail Matveevsky said, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
He said that the modernization potential of the system had been realized less than by half.
Iskander-M will meet modern requirements for quite a long time and remain the primary weapon of the Missile Troops and Artillery at least until 2030, the general explained.
He also noted that Iskander-M is capable of using both aeroballistic and cruise missiles. At the same time, Russia has sufficient scientific groundwork for creating a new system to replace the Iskander, he added.
NEWS.ru earlier reported that the US plans to deploy its first hypersonic missile system with US forces by 2023, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said.
