One of the sons of the former leader of Libya Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam is running for President as he registered his candidature in Libya’s elections.

“Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi submitted … his candidacy for the presidential election to the High National Electoral Commission office in the [southern] city of Sebha,” electoral commission said in a statement.

Other candidates include the military commander of the eastern government Khalifa Haftar as well as the Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh.

Saif al-Islam has wide suport among the Lybian people as they hope that under his rule the country will come at least somewhat close to what it was under his father Muammar’s rule.

Others on the contrary fear the return of the Gaddafi family to power as they would consider it a step back from the democratic path.

However, he might not be registered as following the death of his father he was arrested and several charges were presented against him.

After court’s hearing he was even sentenced to a death sentence, however later was pardoned.

Considering that he is a candidate that has a large chance of winning the rules might be changed in order to ban him from the run.

A conference in Paris which looks over the elections decided that it will sanction anyone who attempt to disrupt or prevent voting, however it did not regulate who can and can't run for the post.

Earlier, Turkey rebuffed French President Emanuel Macron’s claim that it's time for foreign troops to leave Libya and give it a chance to develop on its own.
