Military engineers are going to build more than 50 earthquake-resistant facilities on the Kuril Islands, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov said.

We have already commissioned over 25 different structures on the Greater Kuril Chain. An air defense unit took up duty at an updated combat position on Kunashir island. In total, military engineers will build 51 structures on the Kuril ridge. Everything that we are building there now is designed to withstand earthquakes with a magnitude of up to nine points, Ivanov told Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The deputy minister noted that seven dormitories have already been commissioned for personnel on the Iturup and Kunashir islands. Another one is planned to be completed in early 2021. Timur Ivanov added that the new housing is fully equipped - the rooms have everything needed for life. Diesel generators are installed in modular automated boiler houses of military camps.

Earlier, the Eastern Military District press service reported that the S-300 systems took up combat duty for air defense on the Kuril islands. The system is capable of destroying ballistic missiles, aerodynamic targets at ranges of up to 400 kilometers and an altitude of up to 37 kilometers, as well as covering key facilities from air attacks.

New Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga plans to finalize the talks on the Kuril Islands, aiming for comprehensive development of relations with Russia, including the signing of a peace agreement, reported earlier.
