The Russian Federation will not recognise the Taliban* until its start fulfilling the promises that it gave upon coming to power, said the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The statements of the Foreign Minister came during a Valdai Discussion Club conference.

On Wednesday a Taliban delegation will arrive in Moscow and Lavrov wanted to send a message and make things clear.

The Taliban gave many promises in order to receive international support and recognition when first coming to power.

The promises included the formation of an inclusive government, the permission for women to work and receive education as well as the respect of human rights.

The Taliban was keen on presenting itself as a more modern version of itself, however, it soon became evident that the Islamist movement will follow the same policies as it did in the 1990s.

Many countries awaited the Taliban’s fulfilment of its promises and until then suspended international aid from worldwide aid organizations.

Now Russia joins the same camp as it will not recognize the Taliban until it sees that it is keeping up with its promises.
