Researchers from New York University transplanted a pig’s kidney into a human body and were astonished when they saw that the human body hasn’t immediately rejected the foreign organ. It sowed hope for the further steps in medical progress as such actions might save thousands or even million lives of those who await for the needed organ.


The researchers have done this work, which is known under xenotransplantation, on September 25. It lasted only two hours. The organ that was transplanted, had been obtained from the engineered pig and attached to the dead human body within all the rules and approval from the family of the dead. 

The kidney was connected to the blood vessel in the donor’s upper leg, but it wasn’t inside the abdomen and was protected by a special shield. As the transplantation process had finished the kidney had been left attached to the body for a 54-hours study.

The researchers said that the successful transplantation resulted in urine and creatinine production and the levels of it were “normal and equivalent to what is seen from a human kidney transplant,” the University said, adding that researchers haven’t noticed any attempts for the body to reject the kidney.

The leader of the surgical crew, Dr. Robert Montgomery said that the test was a “transformative moment in organ transplantation.” He told CBS Evening News that expectations have surpassed themselves.

Describing the process, Montgomery said that the kidney had been changing its color, slowly turning “beautiful pink” and it was followed by urine excretion. Seeing that doctors turned silent for a brief period, realizing that the kidney started functioning right away. The doctor evaluated the result as incredible.

Montgomery expects these kinds of procedures would go into real practice within a year or two.

The world is in a hard need of organ transplantation as the number of ill who anticipate for a certain organ exceeds those who could have sacrificed the specific inner part of their body.
