In the last race of season in Abu Dhabi the Red Bull driver defeated his main rival Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes and secured his first trophy in the main racing league.
Dutch Max Verstappen has become F1 world champion after winning the last race of the season Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He outperformed contester Lewis Hamilton with whom he had an equal number of points (369.5 each) before the race.
24-year-old Verstappen arrived the first getting the victory in the last lap following Nicholas Lafti’s accident. The Red Bull driver went on a pit-stop and got soft tires unlike Hamilton who finished the race with worse tires.
«It’s unbelievable. Throughout the whole race I kept fighting then there was the opportunity in the last lap, it's incredible. Finally, a bit of luck for me,» said crying Verstappen in a post-race interview.
He also thanked his teammate Sergio Perez and the entire Red Bull team.
Five cars separated leading Hamilton and Verstappen before the last lap due to ban on overtaking. However, the Dutch managed to get past the Mercedes seven-time world champion.
The 2021 season has become the second in history when two drivers entering the final race had an equal number of points.
Lewis reacted in a calm way during an interview and congratulated the new champion on the victory.
Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) took the third place on the podium in Abu Dhabi. Hamilton's Mercedes partner Valtteri Bottas has obtained the season's bronze medal with 218 points.
Mercedes has also taken the Constructors title which has become the eighth in a row for the German car producer.
If Hamilton, 36, had won the Sunday Grand Prix he would have surpassed F1 legend Michael Schumacher for most championships in history.
