One of the greatest tennis players in history said he would return in Abu Dhabi at the end of this year to get in shape to compete in January’s Grand Slam tournament.

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal announced on Monday that he intended to return this December to take part in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship held in Abu Dhabi on December 16-18.

The plans were presented by the Spaniard during a sponsorship event in Paris.

"My plan is to play Abu Dhabi in December and then in a tournament before the Australian Open. That is my goal."

The player has also unveiled that he started training for an hour and a half each day to regain shape adding that he was feeling better.

“Some days are better than others, but I'm starting to have more positive days than the negative ones. I'm on the right track."

Nadal already won this Grand Slam trophy in 2009 but was defeated in 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2019. In 2022 the Australian Open will take place in Melbourne on January 17-30.

The 20 times Grand Slam champion has been out of action for three months after losing in the semi-finals of the French Open and getting a foot injury after. Nadal now occupies the fifth position in the global standings.

The No 1 in the ATP men's standings Novak Djokovic said on Sunday that he considered participating in the tournament but was not yet sure due to COVID restrictions and players’ vaccination policy. According to leaked emails sent by the organizations to female tennis players, unvaccinated sportsmen will be able to take part in the tournament in case they undergo 14 days of quarantine.
