A van carrying migrants crashed in Encino, Texas.

An overcrowded van with migrants has crashed in Texas, taking the lives of at least 10 people. There have reportedly been some 30 migrants in the vehicle which was going north on Highway 281.

The driver and 9 other passengers were killed, 20 more were injured and taken to hospitals, some of them were in critical condition. It was twice the number of passengers it could run.

According to witnesses of the accident and the authorities’ preliminary conclusion, the van was going at a high speed and attempted to turn right, veering off the road. The vehicle then smashed a metal utility pole and a stop sign.

Sergeant for Public Safety Department Nathan Brandley has presumed that the passengers were illegal migrants, yet the police forces were to contact Mexican consulships.

Local authorities have announced that they opened an investigation.

The US has received fewer migrants during the pandemic but the curb has been increasing since 2020. It is linked with the lifted restrictions and US President Joe Biden’s friendly positions towards migrants after Donald Trump’s severe policy.
