The former police officer becomes the 110th mayor of NYC and only the second Black mayor in NYC’s history.

The Democrat party’s candidate Eric Leroy Adams, 61, has been elected the new mayor of New York City as he defeated Curtis Sliwa, Republican, in Tuesday’s election. The anti-racism activists and former police captain will take office on January 1.

After counting more than 50% of the votes, Adams beat Sliwa with a 66% to 29% correlation. The victory is not unexpected as Democrats outnumber Republicans seven to one in the city.

“Tonight, New Yorkers have chosen one of their own. I am you,” Adams said in a victory speech.

Citizens of New York hope that the former deputy will be able to solve law enforcement instability and tackle the negative consequences of the pandemic in the city where around 35,000 residents have been killed since the outbreak. Among other missions for the new mayor, there are economic recovery and improving the quality of life in the city, as well as determining the way of its development.

Adams’s campaign focused on fighting government inefficiency and guaranteeing public safety. He has promised to establish a balance between tackling crime and terminating racial injustice.

However, many progressives doubt that the centrist mayor will be able to carry out radical reforms in the criminal justice system.

The Democrat became the second Black mayor of NYC after David Dinkins who occupied the post in 1990-1993.

Adams joined the police in 1984 and became a captain before leaving in 2006 to run for the state’s senate seat. He states that he decided to join law enforcement forces after he had been beaten by police officers at the age of 15.

It has also been announced that Republican Glenn Youngkin has been elected as Virginia's governor beating Democrat Terry McAuliffe in a race that drew the attention of the entire American nation.
