The FBI has launched a probe following thousands of fake messages being sent from its servers.

The emails warned about a cyber-attack and were titled “Urgent: Threat actor in systems.”

They were sent from the US Department of Homeland Security and those who received them said that the content of the email said that it is from an extortion group the name of which is Dark Overlord.

"They are causing a lot of disruption because the headers are real, they really are coming from FBI infrastructure," non-profit anti-spam watchdog Spamhaus tweeted.

Around 100,000 of such emails were already sent.

The FBI said that it was "aware of the incident this morning involving fake emails from an @ic.fbi.gov email account".

It is yet unknown whether an FBI worker sent the emails or a hacking took place.

Earlier, the new social media platform, belonging to Trump Media & Technology Group, Truth Social seemed to have apparent vulnerabilities as several hours after the announcement of its launch had come, hackers managed to interfere into it.
