An unusually high number of COVID-19 new cases was registered in Florida on Friday. The number of infected in a single day amounted 21,683, the largest number among all daily cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the data revealed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Saturday.

From July 23 to July 29, 110,477 people have been infected by the wide spreading COVID-19, according to the Florida Department of Health. Florida is one of the most affected by the virus states in the US, White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients said.

“There is no higher risk area in the Unites States than we are seeing here. The numbers that we are seeing are unbelievable, just unbelievably frightening,” Florida International University infectious disease expert Dr. Aileen Marty told CBS Miami.

There were 8,816 COVID-19 related hospitalizations in Florida on Wednesday, and as Florida Hospital Association reported, more than 95% of infected were not fully vaccinated. The average amount of people hospitalized on Wednesday were younger than those who were seen in previous peaks during the pandemic.

“What you heard last year and last spring about this virus mostly targeting seniors and those with preexisting conditions is not true today,” FHA president and CEO Mary C. Mayhew said in a statement.
