Hackers working for the Russian government gained access to the internal communications of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), anonymous sources told Reuters. According to them, the incident was part of a campaign in which Russian hackers also attacked the US Treasury and Commerce Department. The agency does not provide details of the hack.

DHS is responsible for US cybersecurity and border security. It also ensures the safe distribution of the coronavirus vaccine.

Reuters and the Washington Post reported the hacker attack on the US Treasury earlier on December 14. The attack was carried out by the Cozy Bear hacker group (APT29), associated with the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service.

According to the materials, the cyberattack on the US Treasury was 'so serious' that the authorities had to call a meeting of the US National Security Council. It remains unclear what information the hackers stole.

NEWS.ru reported earlier that the Russian embassy had slammed the US media reports of Russian hacker attacks, calling them 'unfounded.'
