US scientists have discovered two new strains of SARS-CoV-2 in the country, TASS reports referring to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

One of the strains is similar to the British one. This variant was identified in only one patient, and so far, it is impossible to judge its prevalence, scientists say.

A second strain with three mutations has been circulating actively in Columbus in recent weeks. Experts believe that this virus is more contagious than other forms.

The chief researcher at the university’s medical center, Peter Mohler, noted that scientists don’t have enough information to judge the effectiveness of existing vaccines against new strains.

The specialist urged the public not to overreact to news of pathogen mutations. Researchers believe that the discovery of new variants of coronavirus in the US supports the hypothesis of the emergence of new strains worldwide.

NEWS.ru reported that Russian vaccines protect against the British strain of coronavirus.
