She has earlier pled guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering.

US prosecutors have demanded the US District Court for the District of Columbia sentence Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, to four years of imprisonment.

Besides, she will have to pay a $1.5 mln fine for her alleged criminal activities.

The former teenage beauty queen confessed in June that she had helped her husband to run the Sinaloa cartel and pled guilty to US charges including distributing drugs, money laundering, and running the cartel’s finances.

The hearing was scheduled for November 30.

The prosecution also presumes that Coronel helped El Chapo escape from a Mexican prison in 2015 by building an underground tunnel to his shower.

Still, Guzmán was arrested the following year and got a life sentence for masterminding a multibillion-dollar drug enterprise in 2019 in Colorado. Apart from deprivation of liberty, El Chapo, who was taken to a "supermax" facility constructed for the most dangerous prisoners, must also pay a $12 bln fine.

Coronel was arrested at Dulles International Airport on February 22 this year.

32-year-old Coronel married Guzmán at the age of 17. The couple has two twin daughters.

On Tuesday Mexican security forces arrested Rosalinda González, the wife of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader El Mencho, regarded as the most wanted criminal in Mexico.
