Doctors have mistakenly injected eight people in Germany with a five-fold dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Four of the patients were hospitalized.
The Stralsund nursing home staff members have received too much of the drug, the local administration of the Western Pomerania-Rügen region said.
Seven female workers and one male worker (aged 66 to 82) received a five-fold dose of the BioNTech - Pfizer vaccine in a nursing home in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund on December 27, 2020, RIA Novosti reports.
Four people were kept in the hospital as a precautionary measure, and they had symptoms similar to those of the flu. The other four were sent home, warned of what had happened. They are in constant contact with the local health department.
I deeply regret this incident. This isolated case is associated with an individual error. I wish all those affected do not have severe side effects, said Stefan Kerth, the local administration head.
The authorities note that during the first phase of vaccine trials, BioNTech gave patients more vaccine doses than needed. No long-term undesirable consequences were recorded then.
Reactions after vaccine administration and systemic changes (most of them influenza-like symptoms) were dose-dependent, usually temporary and mild to moderate, the report said.
