One of the last days in the role of Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel was spent in France’s Beaune where she was welcomed by President Macron and large gatherings of French people who cheered and greeted her by singing.

The head of France, Emmanuel Macron, handed the Chancellor the highest country’s distinction - the insignia of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.

For Merkel it is surely the last visit to France on this duty as the German coalition of three parties stand for welcoming a new Chancellor by the beginning of December.

President Macron praised the Chancellor for the mutual work over the years after pronouncing all the good qualities and achievements of Merkel.

“France has learned to know you and then to love you,” France’s President said.

“You have contributed to keeping Europe united despite all the obstacles,” Macron added, expressing gratitude to Merkel for “teaching me so much.”

Both leaders paid a visit to the Hospices of Beaune, which served as a hospital in the 15th century. There was a Franco-German summit in the city of Beaune dated by 1993, where French President Francois Mitterand and then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl held talks.
