A car with a family inside slid down the bridge in the city of Leuven, Belgium as the drawbridge was raised to let the ship go through.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon when a couple with a 1,5-year-old child entered the Marie Thumas Bridge. The family seemed to have been stuck on the bridge and had made no attempts either to drive back or leave the car until the bridge lifted completely.

As the lifting drawbridge passed the angle of 45 degrees the car started sliding backward with increasing speed. As it hit the ground the vehicle toppled over on its top.

The three family members were trapped in the car until the firefighters freed them. All three were taken to the Gasthuisberg hospital in Leuven.

Commissioner Marc Vranckx said that the family’s injuries are minor and all of them are in non-life-threatening conditions.

The details about the reason for how this could happen are yet unclear.
