Sydney and other major Australian cities are filled with protestors who fill the streets marching against Covid-19 restrictions as Australia records a new high in infections.

The participants of the protest are carrying banners and signs that call for “the truth” and “freedom”.

A woman was seen carrying a banner that said: “This is not about a virus, it's about total government control of the people. This stops now!”

Sydney has been under lockdown for four weeks with residents being able to leave their homes only if they have a reasonable excuse.

“We live in a democracy and normally I am certainly one who supports people’s rights to protest … but at the present time we’ve got cases going through the roof and we have people thinking that’s OK to get out there and possibly be close to each other at a demonstration,” Brad Hazzard, the state health minister, said in a statement.

During the protest, several people were arrested. The exact number has not been reported yet.

Another governmental official, Stephen Jones who is a member of the national parliament from Sydney condemned the protest by naming all the participants as “selfish, reckless idiots”.

“Nobody wants to be in lockdown. This is exactly how you keep it going,” he said.
