Over the past 24 hours, the global coronavirus tally grew by more than 385,000 new cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Thus, the number of confirmed cases exceeded 68.16 million. Since the pandemic onset, COVID-19 has killed 1.557 million people worldwide. The death toll of the past day was 6,171.

The WHO noted that the statistics take into account only official data received from every state.

The largest number of infections was recorded in the United States (14,972,356), followed by India (9,767,371), and Brazil (6,674,999). Russia was the fifth in the ranking (2,541,199).

WHO announced the coronavirus pandemic on March 11, 2020. The outbreak began in China in late 2019, with the first cases reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province. According to preliminary estimations, the city's wet market became the source of COVID-19.

The US has become the world’s biggest source of coronavirus, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said in response to another mention of the ‘Chinese virus’ by US President Donald Trump, reported earlier.
