A former employee of the British Embassy in Berlin was charged with spying for Russia, German authorities said on Friday.

A British citizen named David S. allegedly passed on some information to Russian intelligence in exchange for cash payments. The man will be facing extradition to Britain as the Brandenburg State Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the corresponding request has already been submitted to London.

The police claimed that the man has been spying on Russia since at least November 2020. Prior to his arrest, David worked as a staff member at the British Embassy in Berlin.

The investigation was conducted jointly by British and German law enforcement officers.

The man does not want to return to the UK under any circumstances, Der Spiegel reported, citing his lawyer.

On November 27, UK Defense Chief of Staff Nicholas Carter told the Telegraph on Friday that Russia is more of a threat to the United Kingdom than any extremist groups.
