France’s border with the UK will remain shut until further notice, and efforts will be made to expand and fast-track vaccinations, French Prime Minister Jean Castex said, France 24 reports.
It is out of the question that we lower our guard, Castex said as the country confirmed two clusters of the mutant UK coronavirus variant.
France closed its border with Britain on Dec. 20 after the emergence of a new strain of the disease in the UK. Only certain categories of people, including French citizens and truck drivers, are allowed through the border, providing they have a negative PCR test in the last 72 hours.
Nineteen cases of the British variant have been identified in France, the minister said, including two particularly worrying clusters in the greater Paris region and Brittany.
The new mutation of the coronavirus in the UK became known in mid-December. It is considered 70% more infectious, although the danger of the strain in terms of mortality or hospitalization has not yet been identified.
NEWS.ru earlier reported that an elderly Israeli man died on Dec. 28 of a heart attack after receiving the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine.
