The storm which had quickly developed into a “category 3” hurricane reached the eastern part of Mexico.

Mexican authorities have announced that at least eight people were found dead after hurricane Grace had hit the state of Veracruz on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Six of them were members of the same family from the state’s capital Xalapa. Another capital’s victim was a young girl whose house slid down, officials report.

The eighth victim was registered in the town of Poza Rica in the northern part of the state.

3 people have also been reported missing.

The region’s authorities introduced the state of emergency. Thousands of rescuers including military forces have been deployed to Veracruz.

On Friday Grace was qualified as a “category three hurricane out of five” according to the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale after its speed was recorded blowing 120 mph (195 km/h).

The local government has warned its citizens and erected 200 shelters with another 2,000 to be deployed if needed.

Grace already came to Mexico on Thursday as a “category 1” hurricane at the time. No deaths or injuries were reported, however, several thousand residents found themselves without electricity.
