The offender has been included on terrorist watchlists after being detected twice in buying hunting knives and found to possess Islamic State propaganda videos, according to NZHerald. The alleged terrorist reportedly surfed on the internet requesting “lone-wolf mujahideen” guidance, knife attacks, and information about prisons in New Zealand.
“What happened today was despicable. It was hateful, it was wrong, it was carried out by an individual, not faith, not a culture, not an ethnicity, but an individual person who was gripped by ideology that is not supported here by anyone or any community,” the Prime Minister said.
The police said that there is no more threat as the alleged terrorist was a “lone-wolf”.
“We have dealt with that person. We know from our extensive monitoring that he was acting alone,” police commissioner Andrew Coster said.
A witness of the brutal attack said that the offender looked “like a lunatic” and stroke anybody on his way. Another witness said that the alleged terrorist was asked by the police to surrender before the forces opened fire, five shots were heard.
Fatal shooting conducted by the Police is an extremely rare situation in New Zealand. According to the statistics of the period between 2007 and 2017, there are only 3,5 cases on average a year.
In March 2019, the well-equipped man, armed with several guns of different caliber made planned attacks at the Al Noor Mosque at 1:40 pm and went on assassinating people at the Linwood Islamic Centre at 1:52 pm. The Australian offender Brenton Tarrant, who is considered to be a xenophobe, racist, and islamophobe killed 51 and injured 40. He was sentenced to life in prison without any possibility of parole.
