The joint operation carried out by Romanian police, the US DOJ, and Europol resulted in the arrests of three hackers.

A coordinated law enforcement operation in which agents of the US Department of Justice, Europol, and Romania’s police officers hit one of the most notorious cyber-crime gangs REvil. The mission was carried out both online and offline as several members of the group were arrested during the raids.

Europol which dubbed its operation GoldDust has been taking action against the gang since February arresting a total of seven REvil members in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

American officials have announced that they confiscated around $6 mln in crypto and presented charges against two hackers from Ukraine and Russia accused of participating in ransomware attacks that hit more than 1,000 enterprises around the world making them lose over $200 mln.

"Our message today is clear: The United States, together with our allies, will do everything in our power to identify the perpetrators of ransomware attacks, to bring them to justice, and to recover the funds they have stolen from the American people," Attorney General Merrick Garland said.

The DOJ named two suspects, 22-year-old Yaroslav Vasinskyi, Ukraine, and 28-year-old Evgeniy Polyanin, Russia, who allegedly took part in unprecedented cyber attacks on Florida-based software firm Kaseya, the largest meat processor in the world JBS SA and other notable hacks.

Vasinskyi has been earlier arrested in Poland and is waiting to be extradited to the US for a court trial, while Russian citizen Polyanin is unlikely to face legal challenges.

The Justice Department offers a reward reaching up to $5 mln for the information concerning other hackers and $10 mln for names or location of the leaders of the group which went offline this summer after pressure on them had been intensified.

Cyber-security was one of the topics Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed with the US CIA director William Burns last week.
