Despite the strict safety measures in the Olympic village, the first Covid case was reported, with the Olympics starting in 6 days.

Information about the infected person’s name or nationality was not provided to the media for privacy concerns.

The person is removed from the village and will not present any further danger.

“Right now this person is confined to a hotel,” said Masa Takaya, a spokesman for the Tokyo organizing committee.

The threat of a total outbreak remains as many of the athletes didn’t follow the guidelines and contacted each other.

After the incident was announced, Seiko Hashimoto, the chief organizer of the Tokyo 2020 Games said:

“We are doing everything to prevent any COVID outbreaks. If we end up with an outbreak we will make sure we have a plan in place to respond.”

Earlier the Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that the Olympic Games in Tokyo will be held under a “coronavirus state of emergency” which will last from July 12 to August 22 in Tokyo.
