UK’s Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Tuesday issued a warning addressed to Moscow in which the official said that Russia’s incursion into Ukraine would be a strategic mistake.
Truss claimed that the beliefs regarding NATO’s provoking Russia are spurious. The speech came ahead of a summit of NATO’s ministers in Latvia.
The Foreign Secretary said: “We want a world where freedom and democracy don’t just survive, they thrive.”
“Any suggestion that NATO is provoking the Russians is clearly false. Any action by Russia to undermine the freedom and democracy that our partners enjoy would be a strategic mistake,” Truss added.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also expressed concerns about Russia’s massive military presence on the border, evaluating a large number of Russian troops and hardware as “unusual.”
“Any escalatory actions by Russia would be a great concern to the United States… and any renewed aggression would trigger serious consequences,” Blinken said at a conference before the NATO meeting.
