An employee of a Chinese e-commerce company has died due to working overtime,
The 23-year-old young worker allegedly collapsed and died while walking home from work at 1.30 a.m.
The accused company, Nasdaq-listed discount app Pin Duo Duo, has confirmed the unexpected death of a young female worker but is yet to announce the cause of her death.
'Hope there is no overtime in heaven,' one of the posts read.
The company's employees must work from 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. every day, but most staff don't leave the office until 11 p.m. and work on Sundays.
Jack Ma, founder of online marketplace Alibaba, who recently vanished from public sight after making controversial comments, famously praised the long hours prevailing in high tech companies as a 'huge blessing' for young workers.
I personally think that being able to work 996 is a huge blessing, he said in remarks posted on the company's WeChat account. Many companies and many people don't have the opportunity to work 996. If you don't work 996 when you are young, when can you ever work 996? he told the employees.
The issue fueled an online debate and protests on some coding platforms, where workers swapped examples of excessive overtime demands at some companies.
